Damavand

Mount Damāvand (Persian: دماوند ) also known as Donbavand, is a dormant volcano and the highest peak in Iran with a special place in the Persian mythology and folklore. Located in the middle Alborz Range, adjacent to Varārū, Sesang, Gol-e Zard and Mīānrūd, it is the highest point in the Middle East and the highest volcano in all of Asia. Though not volcanically active, there are fumaroles near the summit crater that deposit sulfur, which were most recently known to be active since July 6, 2007. The mountain is located near the southern coast of the Caspian Sea, in Āmol county, Māzandarān, 66 kilometres (41 miles) northeast of Tehran.

Symbolism and mythology

Damavand is, as any cursory reading of Persian literature will indicate, the Mount Olympus of Persian mythology.Damāvand is the symbol of Iranian resistance against foreign rule in Persian poetry and literature. In Zoroastrian texts and mythology, the three-headed dragon Aži Dahāka was chained within Mount Damāvand, there to remain until the end of the world. In a later version of the same legend, the tyrant Zahhāk was also chained in a cave somewhere in mount Damāvand after being defeated by Kāveh and Fereydūn. Damāvand is also significant to the Iranian legend of Arash. The mountain is said to hold magical powers in the Šahnameh.

Routes to the summit

The best major settlement for mountain climbers is the new Iranian Mountain Federation Camp in Polour village, located on the south of the mountain.There are at least 16 known routes to the summit which have different difficulties. Some of them are very dangerous and need rock climbing. The most popular route is the Southern Route which has step stamps and also a camp midway called Bargah Sevom Camp /Shelter at 4220 m (about 13,845 ft). The longest route is the Northeastern and it takes two whole days to reach the summit starting from downhill village of Nāndal and a night stay at Takht-e Fereydoun (elevation 4300 m - about 13,000 ft), a two-story shelter. The western route is famous for its sunset view. Sīmorgh shelter in this route at 4100 m (about 13,500 ft) is a newly constructed shelter with two stories. There is a frozen waterfall / Icefall(Persian name Ābshār Yakhī)about 12m tall and the elevation of 5100m is the highest fall in Iran and Middle East.

Elevation

The 5,604m given here is from the 1995 Britannica Atlas and it is consistent with SRTM data. The commonly quoted 5,671m elevation is not consistent with SRTM data and there is no evidence that it was derived from an accurate survey.

Gahar Lake

Gahar Lake in Lorestan province is one of the most attractive natural sites situated in the heart of mountains. Located 121 kilometers to the east of Khorramabad and 25 kilometers to the southwest of Doroud, Gahar Lake is 2,250 meters above sea-level. The lake is divided into two big and small lakes that span over an area of approximately 100 hectares. The lake emerged after an earthquake that occurred in Oshtorankouh mountains.

Summer is ideal time for visiting Gahar Lake. In fact, people are not permitted to visit the lake before June 4.During summer, the lake becomes overcrowded due to the large number of tourists visiting the lake. However, during winter, only mountaineers can visit the lake.

The most accessible route for reaching Gahar Lake is via Doroud city, Darb Astaneh Village (Emamzadeh Pir-Vali) and Khiyeh spring. The distance from Doroud to Khiyeh spring is about 17 kilometers.

One can also reach the lake by going through the Gahar mountain pass and traveling a short distance.The surrounding area of Gahar Lake is rocky and tourists cannot set up tents. Only a small section in the northern section of the lake can be used for setting up tents.

Lorestan Department of Environment has considered a total of 30 cement platforms for setting up tents by tourists. A solar and rechargeable illumination system is used for lighting up the area.

The police forces make the region secure. During the mating season,fishing is forbidden in the vicinity of the area. However, in other seasons fishing is allowed after obtaining the necessary permits from the governmental bodies.

Gahar lake has the potential for turning into an international ecotourism zone if proper planning is done. Gahar lake has abundance of cold water fish such as trout.

Mesr

The village of Mesr has an identity that matches the implications of desert areas.It is located 45 kilometers to the east of the city of Jandaq and 30 kilometers to the north of Khor (both in Isfahan province).

The village is a rural heritage that has maintained its identity. Unlike urban areas, there are no traces of posters or graffiti on the baked clay walls of the village. The architectural style of the village is traditional, which has made it possible for its residents to tolerate the burning heat of summer without any electric cooling equipment.

Mesr and its surrounding farms resemble an island located in the vast sea of sands. The special flora of the region is another magnificent tourism attraction. Inhabitants of the area ride camels to movefrom one spot to another. Among the souvenirs of the area are date juice, camel milk and pomegranate sauce.

‘Arousan’, with its green palm groves, is a nearby village often referred to as ‘Bride of Kavir’. In addition to Amirabad, the beautiful palm groves of Farahzad in northern section of Mesr are surrounded by piles of sand. Bamboos measuring four meters in height near a spring some four kilometers east of Mesr enhance the natural tourism attractions of the region.

The main street of Mesr passes through the green farms of Amirabad. Mesr does not have old and narrow alleys like other desert villages, such as Biyazeh, but rather the baked clay residences and the air traps catch the attention of any visitor who walks in the main street.

DORFAK

DORFAK is the largest crater of “IRAN” with 2705meter height and is located in 50km from southeast of RASHT.

DORFAK is considered as the beginging of eastern altitudes of the Sepidroud valley.Western Gilan (Talesh) stretch to neighbourhood of this valley and then DORFAK with its lush surroundings and rocky walls and comes to the eyes.

This peak connects to Manjil heights southenly and Pishkouh mountains and Takht-e-souleyman easternly ending to Tonekabon’s Sehezar valley. There is no continuity to the north but westwards it connects to Sepidrod valley , the beginning of the west Alborz heights.

The recommended time to climb is the second half of Ordibehesht(first half of May) for two days.This region is reach in plants and nettle which is able to cure Rheumatism is widely seen.The dominant fauna reads: fox,wolf,jackal,rabbit,deer,bear,leopard …

The two rivers Siahrod in Rodbar and Chakrod in Lahijan initiates from DORFAK.

There exists 6 routes in order to reach the peak:

3.Shirkouh(north western front)

4.Dafraz(north western front)

5.Estalakh jan(western front)

6.Kardesara(northern front)

Sialk

The ancient mounds of Sialk are located at southwest of Kashan, just on the right side of Kashan - Fin road (Amir kabir street). Sialk consists of two northern and southern mounds, which are about 600 meters far from each other and nearby these sites, there are two cemeteries A and B.

The cemetery a dating back to 3500 years ago, and was located about 200 meters to the south of "southern Tepee ". Nowadays a new street crosses on the cemetery and hidden it. The cemetery B with antiquity of 3000 years old is located under the gardens and farm lands in the west side of Tepee. In the early 1933, some beautiful ceramic wares were appeared in Paris, which came from Sialk near Kashan.

The results of French and Iranian archaeological excavation:

The ancient Tepee Sialk has six cultural periods that consist as follow:

First and second period :These settlement periods were in northern mound of Sialk that is the oldest settlement , about seven years ago ,in Sialk.

Third period :Habitants of northern Tepee left their dwelling, about 6100 years ago, probably some of them settled in southern Tepee that is located in a distance of about 600 meters from northern Tepee.

Fourth period :The period began about 5000 years ago and continued about 4500 years ago. The most important cultural phenomenon, in this period is using primary writing.Dr. S. M. Shahmirzadi, director of Sialk reconsideration believed that mud brick structure in the surface of southern Tepee is the oldest known Ziggurats in Iran. He remarked it during his first investigation season. The mud brick structure was built beside of the main Sialk temple. He wrote in the fourth season report excavation as follows: Today the height of Sialk Ziggurat reaches to 15/94 meters. It has third floor platform, one landing at the south of first platform and one ascendant way. This way was shown to steps in Ziggurat new reconstruction.

Fifth period :This period began about 3200 years ago, and belongs to new immigrants in Sialk.

Sixth period:The period lasted during 2800- 2900 years ago in southern Tepee. It refers to peoples that buried their dead in cemetery B about 250 meters far from west of the Southern Tepee.

Sabalan

Sabalan , (Azeri: Savalan) is a high mountain located north-west of Iran in province Ardebil. Sabalan ,Iran’s third highest peak , is a distinct volcano in the west of the city of Ardebil, 4811m above the sea level.The mountain chain of Sabalan ranges from ‘Ghara soe ‘ valley is the north of Ardebil possessing north-west direction , with the 60Km length and 48Km wiegth and continous to ‘ghoshadagh’ mountain south of Ahar.

Sabalan is the runner up to Damavand which old title of Iran’s most famous . This beautiful peak has a magnificent and pretty lake on the top of her crater which has been cover with snow and ice during whole year.There is permanent snow on this mountain and tracts of old glaciers can be observed vividly.

One of the spectacular specifications of this area is the existance of numorous mineral hot water sources scattered around this mountain , Sarein to Ghotor soe . These are mainly situated in Sarein . Chemical analysis and studying hydrological preporties of mineral water indicates that they originate from earth’s inner layers and whilst passing through various layers solve some of the terrestrials like carbonates and sulphates. Lymph and clear water sources and pleasant meteo are indicative of marvelous fertility and a unique echology .

There , grow over 3000 different species of plants among which the most noticeables are lily , opiate, rose , tulips ,etc .In the region of Sabalan 11 different animal habitats are identified which the most important ones are : ‘Hajilo’ habitat 22 Km to Meshkinshahr , ‘Agha Baba’ habitat near the village ‘Agha Mohammad beglo’ , ‘Vanyl ‘ in the north-west of Ardebil,etc , where goat , ewe ,brown bear , pig , rabbit, fax , wolf, partridge,deer , swan and … live . Another speciality of Sabalan environment is the exitance of plentiful ponds among which we can refer to ‘Gharagol’ , ‘Varigol Hoshang Midani’ and ‘Molla Ahmad’ pond where birds and wild animals live in .
